When visual merchandiser Golden Davenport was diagnosed with a chronic illness, she realized that her physically demanding job was no longer a sustainable fit for her life. Seeking new ways to contribute and support her family, Golden turned to her community for guidance. “I sent out a plea to my network. My old boss, who used to be a Companis volunteer, mentioned that I should reach out.” Although she wasn’t familiar with Companis, she took a leap of faith. She hoped that Companis could help her ease back into graphic design at a pace and schedule that suited her new health realities.
Fortunately, Companis found her the perfect placement at the perfect time—with Sports in Schools, a nonprofit that improves the lives of under-resourced youth in King, Pierce, and Snohomish counties by increasing equitable access to school sports. As the organization prepared to expand its programs, it needed a graphic designer to develop key materials, including an updated impact report, a compelling case statement, and a sponsorship package for an upcoming fundraising gala.
Companis facilitated an introduction between Sports in Schools and Golden to explore a potential placement. The connection was immediate—both parties were eager to move forward. For Golden, this placement was more than just an opportunity to apply her graphic design skills; it was a chance to support a mission close to her heart. As a mother of young soccer players, she understands firsthand the transformative power of sports. “Sports are the constant our kids have,” she shares. “No matter how crazy life gets, soccer has been the constant.” Through her volunteer work, Golden has found deep fulfillment. “It’s a great way to use your talents in ways you might not be able to in your full-time career—and make a real difference.”
Before connecting with Companis, Golden had never heard of Sports in Schools. Now, she is a passionate advocate. “Companis connected me with an organization I never knew existed, but that I’m really impressed and excited by…I wouldn’t have discovered it on my own.” She also understands the challenges that prevent many young athletes from participating in sports. “There’s more to accessibility than just having a sports program at school,” she explains. “Even with leagues that provide uniforms, there are still gaps. Sometimes it’s shoes, equipment, or sweats—so many little things that people don’t think about.” Through her work, she helps bridge these gaps by creating compelling visual resources that connect donors and supporters with the Sports in Schools mission.
Reflecting on her experience with Companis, Golden describes the matching process as thoughtful and empowering. “Agencies come to Companis, but the ball is in our court,” she explains. “There’s no pressure—they want us to be a good fit and feel comfortable.” She also highlights the unique value that Companis brings to the nonprofit world. “Nonprofits have big goals but limited resources. Companis is an expert at helping them find the right people, resources, and energy to fill that gap.”
That’s why Golden enthusiastically recommends Companis to others. For those considering volunteering, she offers this advice: “Do not hesitate! Jump in! The matching is very organic and volunteer-led.” And when asked to describe Companis in three words, she doesn’t hesitate: personable, heart-led, and impactful.
Thanks to Companis, Golden has been able to give back while helping a nonprofit she cares about grow and expand its mission. Her journey is proof that when skills meet compassionate action, incredible things happen.
